Nurse’s View: Schadenfreude is not acceptable! How German Journalism Gets Me

Sabine’s new article for her regular column on Healthmanagement.org is now available!

In this month’s article, Sabine talks about German journalism and its tendency towards Schadenfreude, negativity and criticism of the UK’s healthcare system.

Sabine writes: „I have no idea how German journalism has so much time to report about the Brits. Do German newspapers ever report about the Spanish, Italian, or Polish health systems? If not, what is it about the British?

A fascinating and heartfelt article!

Stammtisch: Free Zoom Meetings for Nurses, Midwives and Other Healthcare Professionals!

It’s time to start an online community and stay connected while COVID-19 is keeping us apart! Every month we’ll be hosting a free Zoom meeting for nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet and chat with other people, share your knowledge and experience, and brush up your English language skills. If you have any anxiety about speaking English, this is a great way to build confidence in a relaxed environment.

We call the get-togethers ’STAMMTISCH’, which is a German word for a reserved table in a pub for people who meet on a regular basis! Although many of the participants will come from a German speaking background, we welcome healthcare professionals of any nationality or background.

Meetings take place in English, via Zoom, and last 90 minutes. We can accommodate about 20 to 25 participants and still have a few places left for the next meeting.

Our next meeting: 29/09/2022, 5pm – 6:30pm (UK time)

EfN Podcast Episode 16: Unacceptable Schadenfreude and Negativity About the NHS

Sabine Torgler continues her monthly podcast series with a brand new episode! The podcast series deals with a variety of topics surrounding nursing, overseas nursing, and other important issues in the world of nursing today. Each episode will be available to listen to exclusively via our website. We hope to make the series available through other channels in the future.

In episode 16 Sabine discusses the apparent prevalence of Schadenfreude (pleasure derived from another’s misfortune) in the German media’s criticism of the NHS. Apart from the fact that the reporting is often driven by poor data and analysis, Sabine also questions why German journalists continually focus on problems in the UK rather than reflecting more on issues within Germany’s own healthcare system or indeed that of any other European country.

UK healthcare workers are more aware than anyone that the NHS needs more funding and reorganisation but, to Sabine, the external negativity and criticism from her heimat (homeland) is unwelcome and disappointing.

Nurse’s View: Is Nursing Without a Mask Strange?

Sabine’s new article for her regular column on Healthmanagement.org is now available: “Is Nursing Without a Mask Strange?”

In this month’s article, Sabine discusses a recent shift in a small private hospital where she discovered that none of the staff were wearing masks anymore. Throughout the pandemic, the mask has become an indispensable part of Sabine’s equipment as a nurse. So, she asks, why abandon it now when the threat of COVID-19 is still present? The NHS policy on masks may yet change, but why should healthcare workers be the guinea pigs?

A fascinating and though-provoking article. Please do check it out!

EfN Podcast Episode 15: A Special Guest

Sabine Torgler continues her monthly podcast series with a brand new episode! The podcast series deals with a variety of topics surrounding nursing, overseas nursing, and other important issues in the world of nursing today. Each episode will be available to listen to exclusively via our website. We hope to make the series available through other channels in the future.

In episode 15, Sabine is joined by a very special guest – her mother, Anne! Anne was a student nurse on the wards in Wilhelmshaven between 1956 and 1958. The interview gives us a fascinating look at nursing more than 60 years ago and an interesting comparison with nursing today. Anne was Sabine’s great inspiration and always told Sabine that if she became a nurse, she would have a great profession for life. How right she was!

Please note, this episode is in German.
