EfN Podcast Episode 16: Unacceptable Schadenfreude and Negativity About the NHS

Sabine Torgler continues her monthly podcast series with a brand new episode! The podcast series deals with a variety of topics surrounding nursing, overseas nursing, and other important issues in the world of nursing today. Each episode will be available to listen to exclusively via our website. We hope to make the series available through other channels in the future.

In episode 16 Sabine discusses the apparent prevalence of Schadenfreude (pleasure derived from another’s misfortune) in the German media’s criticism of the NHS. Apart from the fact that the reporting is often driven by poor data and analysis, Sabine also questions why German journalists continually focus on problems in the UK rather than reflecting more on issues within Germany’s own healthcare system or indeed that of any other European country.

UK healthcare workers are more aware than anyone that the NHS needs more funding and reorganisation but, to Sabine, the external negativity and criticism from her heimat (homeland) is unwelcome and disappointing.
